The medieval village of Civita Superiore di Bojano, known in the Middle Ages as Rocca Boiano, dominates the vast plain to the north and the surrounding hills and mountains.
From the south and with a west-east orientation, they are clearly distinguished on 2 levels on which stand 2 rectangular structures: the castle, residence of the dominus, and the castrum, the urban settlement surrounded by crenellated walls and some towers.

Archaeological excavations conducted in the 1970s and 1980s at the castle of Civita di Bojano have led to the hypothesis that the area was home to the arx of the ancient Samnite city of Bovaiano, the capital of the Sannio Pentro region, located in the valley below. The site, however, was abandoned during the events surrounding the crises of the Roman Empire and was not frequented again until the 9th century. During the Lombard rule, Saracen raids became more frequent and devastating, triggering the process of major territorial significance commonly referred to as "castellation," the consequences of which are still evident today in the presence of settlements and fortresses located on the hills, controlling the cities and roads of the valley floor.
